January 20. Perfect winter weather. Reading Mendelssohn’s letters. Richter—the Georgics—Madame Sand—Genl. Butler—too much rather but still writing occasionally.

Miss Putnam has written a lovely story—“the two legacies.”

The moonlight and morning light are beautiful as the lights over my real life.
