Tuesday October 19 [sic]. Mr Whittier dined and past the evening here. He read “Esbern Snare” to ask how we liked it. Jamie went to Cambridge to Charles Norton’s to meet Goldwin Smith while Mr Whittier sat and talked of his sister and his own life and work. Ten years of his life he devoted to writing for the newspapers and has written 20 volumes full he thinks. Much of it he feels to have been time lost and strength wasted.
