[Boston—Tuesday, 16 February 1864]

Feb. 16. Visit from Mr Rowse—brought me an exquisite photograph from one of his late exquisite pictures, one of the finest he has done.

We were told that Mr Rowse was looking over the illustration of “Dante” by Doré the other day when some one asked what the inscription was over the gate of hell (“he who enters here leaves all hope behind”). Rowse answered “Ici on parle français.”
