[Boston—Sunday, 15 October 1865]

Stormed & blew on Sunday.

Mrs Hawthorne is passing these long lovely days with her husband. She is copying passages from his journals beginning with the year 1836—the first which exist. Much written there is exquisitely beautiful and ready for publication. Mrs Hawthorne is perfectly happy over them, happy too in our sympathy, for the extracts are indeed worthy of admiration.

Sunday was the eleventh anniversary of our marriage. It seems like yesterday, yet like a whole life as it is.
