[Boston—Saturday & Sunday, 21–22 October 1865]

Lissie Winthrop & Bessie Johnson passing Saturday & Sunday—Oct. 21 & 22. seeing studio’s & Maggie Mitchell. Sat. church Mr Bartol Sunday—(a true good discourse) and company in the evening.

Dr Dewey, Tom Appleton & Miss Sallie Dana came to tea. Dr D. recalled the total eclipse of 1806 which he vividly remembered a weird solemnity covered the earth. Speaking of his daughter Kate’s engagement he said, “when those wonderful and beautiful birds came from Singapore, Mrs Carson said, she thought they must sing a tune for the lady to whom they were sent wh. no one else understood.

Mr Appleton amused as excessively as usual. Speaking of Trelawney whom he knew, he said he was a perfect brute and that Dr Howe came near finishing him when he saw him hang his wife out of window in Greece. He said there were two English girls, the Misses FitzHugh in Greece when they were & Trelawney asked him one day if he did not admire them excessively. Why no, I can’t say I do was the reply, I think they are rather scrawny to use your English word. “Ah! that’s just it said T. those long necks always make me think how easy it would be to cut their heads off—a good chance for the sabre.”

Mr & Mrs Quincy & the Marquis de Chambrun & “son amor” came in the evening. We talked French with the latter Lissie W. & I.
