[Boston—Tuesday, 7 November 1865]

Nov. 7th Election Day. Our republican candidate Elected Bullock, Governor. The business passed off more quietly than ever. There was a large crowd of blacks around the polls when Mr Fields went to throw his vote, presently one of them cried out “make room for Governor Andrew” and as the crowd turned to see a portly well-dressed colored man like the Governor in figure approached the polls. There was a shout of good-natured laughter all round.

Read more of Mr Hawthorne’s diary. He seems always teaching himself to observe and to record with accuracy externals, that he may find the drapery for his novels without difficulty.
