[Boston—Tuesday, 2 May 1865]

May 2. Left Boston for N.Y. reading Prosper Merimée novel Colomba by the way. Trying to find the story of “the Gipsy” which gave R.W.E. “The Romany Girl.” The sunset was perfect and the wonder of the sea without limit as ever. Plenty of people on board but I was not quite well and a healing sleep invited me so I lay down & awoke refreshed but like a sheet of blank paper where observations should have been when we reached New York.

Mistake about rooms; but Mr Lorrimer Graham at last established us in University place (no. 15). The Wisteria in bloom. I saw a girl with lilacs too. So spring is fairly compromised and can’t retreat. The weather is lovely like June last year.
