[Manchester—Saturday, 29 July 1865]

Saturday July 28 [sic]. Jamie stayed in town until late for the club dinner where he saw the Marquis de Chambrun in addition to the other interesting club members. The marquis married the daughter of M. de Candolle whose mother was the daughter of Lafayette. His interest in our country is sincere and intelligent. He knows English literature surprisingly. He knows many distinguished Frenchmen personally; among others, Prosper Merrimee who he says, is universally believed to be the father of the empress. He spoke in the highest terms of his genius. Sumner talked loudly and well through dinner. Genl Grant arrived late after Jamie was obliged to leave.

The moonlight was perfect; the weather had been excessively warm. He drove from Beverly.
