[Boston—Wednesday, 20 September 1865]

Sep 20. Weather exquisite—the after summer.

Longfellow told Jamie today that Sir Edwin Bruce dropped down upon him unexpectedly at Nahant last week. He found him a burly Englishman and interesting because an enthusiastic traveler. He asked Sir Edwin about China where he was last stationed if he liked it.

“Very well, if it were not for the excessive heat of the climate; you watch the sun down at night and then go to bed and when you arise in the morning there is the damned thing blazing away just the same.”

It is not often we hear the sun called by that name.
