[Boston—Monday, 25 September 1865]

Monday Mrs Hawthorne passed the night.

Jamie and I went to see Mrs [sic] & Mrs Kean upon their first appearance in America for 18 years. They played Henry the VIII & were well supported. I have seldom perhaps never seen a more thoroughly artistic performance. I shall never forget “the cardinal” in Mr Kean’s countenance, nor her womanly & graceful rendering albeit she has sixty years over her head and his teeth are gone.
