[Manchester—Monday, 4 September 1865]

Monday Sep 4. Jamie’s first day at his new store. The papers blew a loud trumpet about it and about him.

A season of fearful drought but the wind blows cool from the North East now and there is promise of rain.

A number of interesting people called to see Mr Fields. Dr Frothingham whose eye-sight has almost forsaken him was led in and offered his congratulations upon the agreeable establishment. He said, Brother Bartol is my chief joy! He quoted an appropriate text on behalf of the new shop which Jamie forgot.

Edward Everett Hale came in and said Mr George Bartol preached one of the most excellent & sententious discourses on Milton last Sunday it had ever been his good fortune to hear.

James F. Clarke & his daughter came in from Miss Fanny McGregor’s funeral. A brilliant life quenched in a moment by an accidental discharge of a pistol.

Dr Holmes gloats over the pleasant establishment for the old firm.
