[Boston—Saturday, 6 October 1866]

Saturday morning Lissie arrived. Joyous season! The drop of earth’s bitterness was not lacking. J. was ill in bed and suffering somewhat all day. Mr Longfellow came to inquire particularly. He had been looking for a wedding gift for Charles Sumner. I lived upon the stairs, performing staircase gymnastics all day, the door bell ringing incessantly, for congratulating relatives or business.

Weather—pure October glory.
