[Boston—Saturday, 15 December 1866]

Saturday. Sat to Lissie for the hand in Mrs Abington’s portrait after Sir Joshua today. The hand in the engraving is nil.

Bayard Taylor came in the evening and passed the night. His manly friendliness is beautiful, he is a man who is hungry for his friends & is true to them,—but just now he is somewhat avaricious of praise. His Picture of St. John, Lowell has today been praising and he wishes to hear us say something but I cannot. He passed the night, breakfasted and went to Cambridge for Sunday but will return in the evening, or towards night.
