[Boston—Saturday, 29 December 1866]
Saturday Jan. [sic] 29. J. went to Saty Club dinner—fuller table than usual. I went down to see him in his office a moment just before dinner-time, found Longfellow there who joked a little about ladies being admitted to the Club and laughed aloud over J’s representation of Emerson who had just been in. Mr E. had only lately returned from New York where he had been staying with our hospitable Bottina. He said, “the great Hindoo Hippam Thi was nothing but the side of such hospitality as hers. Hippam Thi would soon lose his reputation.”
Lissie & I sat at home and studied up the Dolliver Romance for a picture—perhaps she will paint Pansie.
Weather lovely, clear, & cold.
