[Boston—Wednesday, 11 April 1866]
Wednesday morning. Dear Laura came with Mr Johnson early at five o’clock. Ann ran down to let them in for we were really too sleepy for anything but to feel quietly glad they had come.
George Thompson one of the English pioneers in Abolition dined with us. He is a man of presence, with a Quaker simplicity but sustained by something of the majesty of reserved power. He talked of India, her glory, her beauty, how much we may learn from India; of the foolish idea that we may teach them the highest truth when many of the people far surpass the average mind in a lofty conception of truth. He spoke of Sakoontala which Jamie at once borrowed in the evening from kind H.W.L.
Laura and I passed the evening quietly while Mr J. and Jamie went to the Dante reading.
