[Boston—Saturday, 14 April 1866]

Saturday. Bessie came in town early and we all went together to hear Mr Emerson’s first lecture. Afterwise Mr E., Ellen, Edith & her husband, Edward & Mr Longfellow all joined us at dinner. We had a very happy time; the whole scene was like a festival; Jamie had brought in May flowers enough for each end, the table was as gay as our spirits. The sunshine as it went dancing down the table near sunset and gleaming on the flowers was so beautiful that it delighted Longfellow, whose eyes gleamed with pleasure. Jamie walked half way home with H.W.L. & then returned for a quiet evening with me.
