[Boston—Monday, 30 April 1866]

Yesterday Sunday we passed in the morning with mother and on the Highlands of Roxbury; in the early afternoon came the Aldrichs to say that Osgood who arrived the day previously from Europe was ill, we went to tea with Louisa who upbraids us a little; she tries not to say too much for suffering Lissie to remain in Europe. In vain I try to make her see that no one can play conscience nor should do it, for another but we end too often where we began for we both feel badly to have mother in a hotel and so far away but if she prefers it Jamie says we must not interfere.
