[Manchester—Tuesday, 7 August 1866]

Tuesday. August 6th [sic] A morning of wonderful beauty, the atmosphere of crystalline cleanness, a fresh air bringing you good news from the far seas. Jamie stayed in Manchester and Dr Bartol rowed us across the bay and pioneered us to woodlands more beautiful than any I have before seen hereabouts.

George R. Russell was buried today—the lovely morning died down into soft evening, sad-colored and consonant with the feelings of the poor fatherless family who are weeping in the next house.
