[Boston—Saturday, 29 September 1866]

Saturday Sep. 29 devoted to business for mother and housekeeping thoroughly tired at night. Jamie at the Club. Brilliant evening. Mr Dana had returned, Mr Sumner was present and a full table—the guests were beside the usual company, Mr Lefavre of England, Dr Storer of N.Y. Mr Putnam publisher ditto, Mr Sam. Hooper, young Wendell Holmes, afterward Longfellow, Holmes, Dwight, Lefavre, J. etc. went in company to hear Parepa. O.W.H. said “yes let us go I hate to have an old end of an evening left over” (as if it was an old cigar J. said).

A fine copy of “Linnaeus” from London which dear J. sent for, a real treasure, came today.
