[Boston—Wednesday, 23 January 1867]

Wednesday. Lovely weather again—morning broken up with plumbers and house business—obliged to go out before two and what with errands & visits we did not reach home until nearly 6—at 7 we were engaged out to tea to meet Adelaide Phillips who sang to us so beautifully with such noble expression & power that we said at once, no one in America is singing as she does. The pride and desire of her life seems to be to bring the Orpheus of Gluck out in Boston. How I wish we might help her. It could hardly fail of success.
