[Boston—Monday, 7 January 1867]

Monday Eve. went to a gay party at Mrs Murray’s where a play was capitally performed & a comic lecture by W.R. Emerson. J.T.F. went to the meeting for relief of Candia where Dr. Howe spoke most touchingly. Something must be done for the poor Candiotes. It seemed strange to me last night to be wearing a satin dress with the beautiful gold locket containing the ancient gem which Mr Stillman sent me when I remembered they had scarcely food enough to eat or room to be comfortable in; for the suffering of the surrounding people affects the Stillmans, of course. They are still in Candia.
