[Boston—Wednesday, 23 October 1867]

Wednesday Oct. 23. We have had almost July warmth and exceeding beauty of foliage until today when the wind has gone north and the skies are brilliant and cold.

Quiet has settled down upon our small household for a time. I have three able servants, my only hope is I may keep them & that they may learn to love & respect us.

I was out gardening two hours & a half yesterday—planting bulbs for spring gayety.

Reading too Swinburne’s article on Matthew Arnold—a glowing surge of eloquence.
