[Boston—Saturday, 5 October 1867]

Saturday the rain pours. We look for Louisa Tuesday.

Judge Wayland came to dinner. He is a rapid man full of anecdotes but does not give one an idea of being a high moral power like his father Dr Wayland. Yet he is a good man as the saying goes and certainly an entertaining one. He appears to have cultivated the anecdotical side of himself almost to excess. His carriage did not come so they kept up the fire until nearly ten. The night had grown excessively warm and we were tired by that time.
