[Boston—Friday, 1 November 1867]

November 1st Governor Andrew is dead! Perhaps after the death of President Lincoln the loss of no one man will be so deeply deplored as that of Mr Andrew. To us as neighbors the loss is double for he failed in none of the hospitalities of daily life. He was benevolent and accessible always and as charitable a man in the largest sense of the word as ever walked the earth. I think Ole Bull’s son might have pointed his remark with some purpose to Governor Andrew when he said to J. one day in crossing the Common, Mr Fields you must thank God for your disposition.
