[Boston—Sunday, 10 November 1867]

Sunday. Mr Dickens probably left England yesterday and the excitement with regard to his readings rises on this side of the water.

Lady Amberley made quite an impression upon both of us (Mrs Stowe & myself). She has aplomb, simplicity and intelligence. Her knowledge of English politics is such as is seldom met with and her interest is hardly less in the subject of religion. She has been a student of Comte & a listener to his expounders. The travelers are being received intimately & much fêted wh. is quite right, it does us good.
