[Boston—Tuesday, 19 November 1867]

Nov. 19. Mr Dickens reached Boston yesterday. J.T.F. went down the harbor to meet him. He was in grand health & spirits; the sight was lustrous and impressed him by the sublime clean[n]ess & beauty.

I have omitted to give an account of an interesting dinner J. had at Judge Warren’s last week. The Judge is an old man now but it was deeply interesting to hear his reminiscences of the bar, of Webster & others. His stock of anecdote appeared literally endless. He could give an excellent picture of New England when the minister reigned supreme & was the aristocracy, the same period Mrs Stowe is painting.

Yesterday I adorned Mr Dickens room with flowers which seemed to please him. He was in the best of good spirits with everything.
