[Boston—Saturday, 30 November 1867]

Saturday. Georgie Fields was buried at Mt. Auburn. We drove for Dr. Peabody and he returned with us also. It is J.’s evening at the Saturday Club. His guests are old Mr Dana, Mr Dickens, Mr Bigelow & I believe Governor Musgrave. He has never stayed so late before—the dinner begins at ½ past 2 & here it is half past nine.[1]

It has been a fine day, the wind blowing the waves madly on to the shore, the salt spray actually driving against the windows and freezing there—a perfectly marvellous sight, the bay light green with hovering frothy foam & the sea-gulls beating up & down.

1. AF recorded a second account of the event: “Mr. Fields’ evening at the Saturday Club. His guests were Mr. Dana Sr, Dickens, Mr. Bigelow (Editor of Benjamin Franklin, co-editor of the N.Y. Evening Post, Minister to France, etc.) and Governor Musgrave. He has never stayed so late before. The dinner begins at half past two and here it is half past nine!”
