[Boston—Wednesday, 20 February 1867]

Wednesday. Went to a meeting of the Mayhew Freedmen’s Society at Mrs C.G. Loring. There were one or two amusing anecdotes told by the teachers in their letters from the South of their colored pupils. One old man was asked “how can you get to Europe?” “By crossin’ de sea.” “That’s right, but what sea.” Darkie encouraged by his first success replied boldly “Tennessee.” A small boy being asked “Who came down from heaven and delivered men from the bondage of sin” replied “De Yankees.”

Snow falling heavily again—went to see Lilian Aldrich who is very ill.
