[Boston—Sunday, 10 March 1867]

Sunday. Went to hear Mr Bartol—a good sermon but afterward there was scarcely a dry eye when Mr Bartol having left the church, a series of resolves were past [sic] in order to express our gratitude for his devotion during 30 years to the well-being of the society. Mr Loring’s address was very beautiful—clear and full of feeling. Fortunately dear Mrs Putnam was there—we walked up the steps with Mrs Bartol and it seemed as if she had as much as she could do to contain her feelings.

We were shut in by the fierce storm all the afternoon.

Mr Howells came from Cambridge to pass an hour. His wife has lost her expected baby.
