[Montreal—Monday, 1 July 1867]

Monday 1st of July. First celebration of the Canadian Confederation (Gladstone says annexation will follow and even more important than Gladstone, because they are on the ground and can take the gauge of the people’s feeling better, so say the leading men here). We went to the Review—it was very fine but declined the grand lunch to which we were asked, afterward. I was bent upon finding some servants and did so; how they will turn out I can’t say—one is yet in Ireland the friend of the woman I have engaged.

Left Montreal for Quebec in the aft. Mr Hale & Mr Kidder were already on the boat when we arrived and kind sweet L.F. was there to wave adieux.
