[Boston—Saturday, 13 July 1867]
Saturday Lovely weather, cooler than yesterday, went with Lissie yesterday and talked over her prospects in her studio. How difficult it has been for her and for us this business of her artist-life. I fear her success can never be pre-eminent from a natural lack of insight, yet I cannot say since she has much, much talent and education, and desire must do wonders for her. But her want of success makes her sad. The two pictures ordered by the Miss S.’s have been returned upon her hands because “they do not happen to like them!” Life is not easy but we are all “at school” let us remember, that will clear up matters for us somewhat.
