[Boston—Sunday, 21 July 1867]

Sunday. Raining again with delightful persistence, heavily all day. Dr Holmes dropped in just before church to inquire after Jamie’s hand (because he writes for himself very little now) and Mrs Holmes stopped on her way to church. They are delighted with the little improvements we are making in our house. O.W.H. left his polyglot Phi Beta verses—quaint and queer.

In the afternoon Aldrich came to read Jamie a poem. He says it is as beautiful as Béranger!!! However, it may be—Aldrich has a spark of the true flame in him though I have thought at times that it was a very little spark. But we will see what time can do.

Delicious day, delicious rain
