[Northampton—Tuesday, 9 July 1867]

Tuesday the joy continues, we walked until nearly 12.—& in the afternoon went over [to] the old house of Gov. Wentworth near Portsmouth—(Little Harbor). Patty Wentworth’s Spirit stood in the wainscotted reception room and the whole place wore an aspect of strange antiquity for New England. Mrs Cushing an old lady of 85 occupies the house.

At night mother & Sarah arrived and we had the happiness of welcoming them.
