[Manchester—Thursday, 29 August 1867]

Thursday. We had intended to go to see Mr Whittier but it was a rainy warm dog-day-ish time and we wanted sunshine. Jamie stayed down and we went to the Danas. In the afternoon as we returned from walk came a note from Longfellow saying he could pass tomorrow with us—we met his children & Mr Dana’s two youngest in a wagon and had a race wherein they conquered though Edie Longfellow said she did not think it was much to win over such an old one-sided horse! The rain poured soft and steadily all night but
