[Manchester—Wednesday, 11 September 1867]

Wednesday. Resplendent day. Wandered about nearly the whole morning. J. came down early when we drove through Beverly and afterward walked up to view some land back of Eagle-Head with a wondrous view for which we have made an offer. There is not much hope that we shall get this land and if we do not I shall think all is for the best—indeed we have not offered a very high price and if it falls to us, it will be clearly intended we should establish ourselves. Even if we get the land, if there are mosquitos we shall not build after all. But it is a glorious spot. Nothing however can equal the Dana’s place.
