[Manchester—Wednesday, 4 September 1867]

Wednesday. Soft haze in the morning—nevertheless we expected Whittier and drove to Beverly for him. The sun came out and we took Lucy Larcom to drive when we found that Whittier did not arrive; indeed we had planned to do this—reached home late for dinner, walked to the rocks in the afternoon and passed several hours there—the moon came to light us back to the village—a perfect day! Surely I should lay a white stone upon it.
