[Boston—Monday, 27 January 1868]

Monday. Still snowing. Mr Parton’s admirable paper on Roman Catholicism in America came last night and we read it through.

It is odd how prejudiced people have allowed themselves to become about Dickens. I seldom make a call where his name is introduced that I do not feel the injustice done to him personally, as if mankind resented the fact that he had excited more love than most men.

Reading Froude’s admirable essays—was continually reminded of that saying of Dickens “Froude is a brave man.”
