[Boston—Thursday, 29 October 1868]

Octer 29th Ticknor & Fields no longer exists. “Fields, Osgood and Co.” is the firm, and most unfamiliar does it sound to the ears of the public who for so many years have seen the above imprint. Jamie has been deeply excited by the events of the passed few days—during which for 6, 8, & 10 hours almost without interruption he has been exerting his strongest and subtlest influences to bring about this result. Ticknor goes to Europe as soon as possible. I came today upon Burns’s Song, “The Ruined Maid’s Lament” which appeared to me to have unspeakable sweetness & force.
