[Boston—Saturday, 21 November 1868]

Saturday 21. To my dismay, for the moment, Lissie Bartol stood at the door when it was opened this morning. Over nine thousand miles of sea she has come back swiftly and safely.

She came too with dear Laura, who has won all hearts by her sweetness in this hour of her affliction.

We had a long interview.

Jamie came home early having been to call on Miss Kellogg. He did not find her, but her mother who is certainly one of the most astonishing women to talk possible. Her daughter is called “she” and “that choild.” Her keenness is not to be gainsayed.
