[En route to Boston—Wednesday, 20 October 1869]

Wednesday. Clear lovely weather, everybody but ourselves on deck. We do not know how to be sufficiently thankful for this. The ship is so overcrowded it is impossible to find shelter in the cabins if the weather be bad.

A cheery Scotch Stewardess goes about complimenting her patients. I heard her call Mabel “a perfect gem” today from the alacrity with which she got on deck this morning.
