[Edinburgh—Wednesday, 16 June 1869]

Wednesday. Walked over Calton hill with Mabel in the morning. Visited old Edinburgh with Dr. Robert Chambers in the afternoon—a queer old Scotsman of whom more anon if possible, refused an invitation to go to Mr. Douglas’s in the evening where Jamie went & heard Professor Blackie, Dr. John Brown & others sing the old Scotch songs over their Whiskey toddy with tearful fervor (a note from Dickens this morning)!
