[Melrose—Monday, 21 June 1869]

Monday, bade farewell to Melrose. I shall never forget how the jackdaws were calling from the tip top of the old ruins as we said good bye. To Edinburgh, Stirling, and thence to the Tros[s]achs was a good day’s journey but the skies were clouded, the atmosphere cool, without being cold and our drive into the heart of the hills to Loch Achray into Scott’s ground was most exciting.
