[Gad’s Hill Place—Tuesday, 8 June 1869]
Tuesday. Dear Jamie went to town. Miss Hogarth told me about the family, showed me the house, the cellar etc. I have the deepest respect for her, she has been able to do everything for C.D. in his home. Company to lunch of ladies. C.D. did not join but sat in the hay and on the roof almost all day. I sat a good deal in my room for Mr. Dolby was with C.D. and company with Miss Hogarth.
Poor Collins sick in his room. C.D. told J. that when he was ill in his reading only Nelly observed that he staggered and his eye failed, only she dared to tell him.
