[Boston—Sunday, 23 October 1870]

Sunday—such a sermon from Dr. Putnam! (Oct. 16—our engagement anniversary) Dr. Putnam spoke of worldly & unworldly gifts—and after our dear Lord & his teaching, showed how all good & wise revere the gifts of poets and heaven sent teachers.

My heart was touched, I seemed to sit among the assembly of the purified. And to see all wrong desire fall away from us. I saw our beloved who have passed away; I saw them as new men and I felt a new strength pass into me at the sight.

God has indeed sanctified this man and given him the power such as the apostles of old possessed as a clear gift, “to teach & to preach.”
