[Boston—Sunday, 9 October 1870]
Sunday Oct 9. Have been re-reading Edwin Drood to mother and Sarah. What a keen satire upon what is called journal keeping is that journal by Jasper.
Charlotte Dana, whose great aunt married Mr. Allston told me the other afternoon, (as if from memory) having heard her grandfather relate what Mr. Allston told him, of the manner in which Coleridge loved to repeat Kubla Khan, with some thing of the manner of a dream hanging about him, recalling thus the dreamy mood in which it was written.
