[Boston—Sunday, 13 November 1870]

Sunday 13. Went to hear Dr. Putnam with James Parton & dear J. The former says he is a pagan, but somehow the service suited his case exactly.

I am entirely filled with my endeavor to found a coffee-house to counteract whiskey drinking. God knows if I shall succeed!!

Mrs Putnam in the afternoon read letters from Mme Guépin, wife of the Prefect of Nantes—a terrible picture of French suffering at this time.
