[Boston—Monday, 23 January 1871]

Jan’y 23. It proved an unnecessary alarm! The evening went off well enough but unenthousiastically & at last Fechter gave all the money to the poor!

Imogen Willis Eddy and her child of 2 years old are making a visit here. We have busy days just now. But this poor little mother, homeless, with a sot for a husband is a touching sight. She is gay and happy with her baby however. I hope she will stay a long time.

Jamie went to the Harvard Musical Club dinner last night. They had a merry time, he, setting the whole company off into uproarious jollity. His papers in the A.M. win golden opinions.
