[Manchester—Saturday, 16 September 1871]

Saturday 16. Finished “Macbeth” aloud. The scene where the physician comments on her madness, as she speaks, took hold of me with a strong horror which I had not felt before. It was hardly like even a reflection of truth in a mirror—it was gazing upon it through an open window.

Much interested in what our neighbor Mr. Trask has told us of Prince Galitzen, whose father was friend of Beethoven, having sailed for this country with Russian musicians, being himself an enthousiast for music and a leader of this band which he has created among his own serfs.
