[Boston—Tuesday, 31 December 1872]

December 31st What a long year this has been because it has been crowded with life & work. Every month has seemed like two—except those delicious months of summer which glide in an out as the hours most of what we call eternity.

Jamie started this morning to lecture far down in Maine but the snows were too heavy for him to get there on time—so happily he has remained at home for New Year’s.
