[New York—Monday, 12 February 1872]

Monday. Laura came from Staten Island and passed the day with us, carrying her friendliness so far even as to come over with us to Brooklyn where J. lectured that night. It was a long tedious drive but she lightened the way.

President White told us an anecdote which amused us tremendously—John Lord proposed a series of questions which were used in Mr Abbot’s school. A friend going in one morning heard the following.

Mr. Abbott loquitor—

“Young ladies! What is the result of duties well performed.”

Young lady replies—

A rainbow round the heart, Sir!!!
